Petro Jacyk Microfilm Collection of
Ukrainian Serials (1848-1918) Robarts Library, University of Toronto,
Canada
In 1982 with Petro Jacyk’s generous support,
a unique collection of 175 newspapers and
journals published in Western Ukraine (Galicia, Bukovina, and
Transcarpathia) during the former Austro-Hungarian Empire
was copied on 400 microfilm
reels. These reels were subsequently
deposited at the Robarts Library of the University of Toronto in
1983.
It is the richest holding of pre 1918
Ukrainian Serials in North America.
Microfilm laboratory at the Stefanyk
Scientific Library
Lviv, Ukraine.
The
equipment provided by the Foundation in 1994 allowed the Stefanyk Scientific Library to
establish a high quality microfilm
laboratory, enabling it to prepare microfilm copies of some of its rare
literary works for the University of Toronto Robarts Library and
other Western libraries. In addition, the Foundation also paid
for a new computer system for the Library.
Institute for Historical Research
Lviv University, Ukraine
The
Institute for Historical Research was established in 1992 as a
Western-style counterpart to the traditional historical
institutes of the Soviet era. The Institute's primary area of
study is the history of 19th and 20th-century Ukraine. In 1997,
the Foundation initiated support of the Institute's research and
publications, which provide the factual basis for the
update to the fundamental analysis of Ukraine's history
initiated by M. Hrushevsky's History of Ukraine-Rus'.
These publications include: History of Ukraine: 19th-20th
Centuries, the Guide to the History of Ukraine,
Ukraine 1991-1996: Progress of Independence, and
Hrushevsky and the Views of Contemporary Historiography.
Petro Jacyk Ukrainian Studies Unit at the School of Slavonic and
East European Studies

In
1991, the Foundation provided seed money for the establishment
of the Lectureship in Ukrainian Studies. After three years
of financial support, it became a permanent program funded by
the University of London.
Study Program
for Young Ukrainian Diplomats
Ukrainian Free University, Munich, Germany
Petro Jacyk Education Foundation was a
co-sponsor of a program of studies for young Ukrainian
diplomats.
This
project was organized in cooperation with Ukraine’s
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education.
Five to seven young diplomats from Ukraine receive theoretical
and practical training in their field with special emphasis on
the relationship between diplomacy and international economics.
It
enjoys the support of the Hertie Foundation in Frankfurt, Germany.
Ontario Heritage Foundation,
Toronto, Canada
The
Ontario Heritage Foundation's mandate is to preserve, protect,
and promote Ontario's diverse heritage. The Petro Jacyk
Education Foundation's grant,
contributed in 1992, covered the costs of the full restoration of
the Oval Boardroom at 10 Adelaide Street East.
The Bloor West Village Ukrainian Festival
Toronto, Canada
Petro Jacyk Education Foundation is an annual
sponsor of the Bloor West Village Ukrainian Festival which
promotes Ukrainian Heritage.
International Committee of Historical
Science
Switzerland
Petro Jacyk Education Foundation pays the annual membership of
Ukraine to the International Committee of Historical Science,
Switzerland.
Projects in Brazil
Both Petro Jacyk and the
Education Foundation have donated funds to establish a school
for Ukrainian children in the City of
Prudentopolis and to rebuild a burnt-down Ukrainian seminary in
Curitiba city.
Student scholarships and research grants
During the first years of its
existence, the Petro Jacyk Education Foundation expended
thousands of dollars in scholarships and grants
for Ukrainian students and researchers as well as
paid in full the fees for
TOEF and GMAT tests taken by students in Ukraine. This
has enabled many Ukrainian
students to write these tests, free of charge and subsequently
continue their studies at Western universities. The Petro Jacyk
Education Foundation provided annual awards to graduates of
Humberside Collegiate Institute in Toronto with exemplary
knowledge of Ukrainian.
This scholarships and
grants program was terminated in 1993. |
